tal caso, cada 528 bytes asignados se denomina búfer Segmento reservado de memoria que se utiliza para almacenar

para reducir los accesos a las unidades de disco y por ende
aumentar la velocidad de las operaciones con los archivos (la
velocidad de proceso en la memoria RAM es mayor que la velocidad
de lectura o de grabación en el disco). Cuando un programa
de aplicación requiere sólo unos pocos bytes de
información de un sector del disco, y luego necesita
otro poco más, no tiene sentido práctico leer
el mismo sector repetidamente desde el disco, el cual, por ser
un elemento mecánico, es relativamente lento. El sistema
operativo carga en el bloque de buffers la última información
leída del disco, y antes de ir a éste por más
datos, primero verifica si los tiene en uno de los buffer. En
DOS cada buffer requiere 528 bytes de
memoria RAM. Cuando no existe el archivo CONFIG.SYS, o éste
no tiene una línea que asigne cierto número de
buffers al manejo de los discos, entonces el DOS reserva 4 unidades
de manera automática. Cada buffer tiene capacidad para
los datos de un sector estándar (512 bytes) de disco,
y requiere además 16 bytes para manejo del DOS (en total
son 528 bytes). Cuando un programa envía datos hacia
el disco, el DOS los va acumulando primero en uno de los buffer
hasta tener el equivalente a la capacidad de un sector, momento
en el cual procede a grabarlo en la superficie magnética
