Identificado en 1802, el tantalio (Ta, en
honor al mítico rey griego Tántalo) metal refractario
que se caracteriza por un elevado punto de fusión (3000°C,
5425°F), buena ductilidad y buena resistencia a la corrosión.
Tiene, sin embargo, una elevada densidad y una resistencia pobre a los productos químicos a temperaturas por encima
de los 150°C (300°F). El tantalio también se
utiliza como un elemento de aleación.
El tantalio se utiliza mucho en capacitores electrolíticos
y en varios componentes de las industrias eléctrica,
electrónica y química; es también utilizado
para aplicaciones térmicas, como en hornos y en intercambiadores
de calor resistentes a ácidos. Está disponible
una diversidad de aleaciones con base al tantalio; se presentan de muchas formas para uso en misiles y en aeronaves. El tantalio se procesa mediante técnicas similares a las utilizadas
para el procesamiento del niobio.
